When it seems the impossible dream, Team Engineering has the answers you need.
Mike, homeowner in Southern NH, has always had a passion and talent for basketball. He played all through high school and never stopped, to this day continuing to play in men’s leagues. Says Mike, “Being in a gym, shooting baskets, is therapeutic – a good way for me to relax and unwind. I’d much rather be playing sports for exercise, and basketball is my sport of choice”.
He and his wife Marnie have four children, all of them playing basketball since the first grade. Mike’s passion for the sport is such, that when he found himself in a position to do so, he wanted to act on the desire to have his own indoor basketball court. “It’s been a dream of mind for a long time and we actually spent about 5 yrs trying to figure out how to make it work, how to incorporate it into the house. I had other designs, I did a lot of drawing myself in trying to make this big structure look appropriate and match the house, and I could never get there”.
It was evident that he needed to find the people that could make that happen for him. Through a trusted contractor that had done work for him before, John Flynn Builders, he was introduced to Team Engineering. John Flynn knew that a plan from a professional engineering firm would ensure that all factors of the construction, along with a strong architectural and structural design, would be handled correctly, progress smoothly and result in the safe facility that Michael and his children would enjoy together to create many family memories.
After a walk-through, it was determined that the court couldn’t reasonably be created inside or connected to the residence, but should instead be a separate building that would be in harmony with it. It was agreed that the structure should not take away from the existing home, but add a great visual element to the grounds, while housing the dreamed-of basketball court. Mike says “In addition to having the design for the structural work, which was pretty significant, Brian (of Team Engineering) came up with the idea of making it look totally different from the house, like a barn, and that was kind of like a eureka moment. He was able to show us what that would look like, and we were happy with it. So Brian began with the structural work, John looked at the plans to determine what he was going to need and started contacting subs, and after that, it all came together relatively quickly”.
An interesting twist to the plan for the new construction is that Marnie had a dream too, for the built-in pool she had always envisioned for the property. Contractor John Flynn and Team Engineering worked in cooperation with Terrain Planning & Design for this new added piece to the project, as his company needed to attend to and complete the pool installation, hardscape and landscaping, including a beautiful fire pit… all prior to the construction of the barn in order to provide for large equipment access to get it done. When Marnie was asked about this, she said, “The pool was not going to happen. I have always wanted one and Mike did not. I asked for a draft with and without the pool from Eric Brand (of Terrain Planning & Design), and Mike decided then when he saw it, that we had to have it.”
She adds, “We also planned for a playscape area, so we would have a flat grassy space up top (behind the pool area) for the kids to play. We have a soccer goal, a lacrosse goal, and the kids have plenty of room there for this. It’s nice to have the kids HERE. They are getting to teen-age years, and I want to see and know who their friends are. This brings it all together”.
When asked about the experience with this large project, having new construction, new landscape and a pool installed, all pieces of the project closely following on the heels of the other, Marnie answers, “They’ve done a very good job. We are super excited”. Mike adds, “We are pretty detail-oriented and have pretty high standards. Everything we’ve asked for has been done, and done well”.
Clearly, this couple had hired the right professionals for the many pieces of this project to come together so wonderfully, in a timely fashion and with such stunning results. Much like any organized sport, the effort from those with experience, and skilled also at working well together, brings about a monumental victory. Additionally, a construction or renovation that begins with a professional plan from an engineering firm will not have structural issues or failure, and will retain its resale value. That can’t be said of all projects where this step is skipped as unnecessary or in an attempt to save money.
Team Engineering’s strengths are in evaluating all aspects of architectural and structural design, actually planning towards a construction or renovation that works, with no expensive project stalls or revised or abandoned plans partway through the project. They also know the costs involved up front, and can share this with the client, which means if another way needs to be found to work within a budget, it’s known at the planning stage, and not after construction has started, or even worse, is an unhappy surprise at completion.
Eric (of Terrain) says, “We put together the plan for the swimming pool, and a pretty elaborate landscaping, with firepit patio, large natural stone pool deck, fieldstone retaining walls with two cascading water features, a lot of new plantings and they (the home-owners) wanted a sports field for their kids to play soccer and lacrosse. So we did a grading plan that allowed for a nice flat area there too.
It didn’t start that way, but this grew into a tremendous project. We worked hand in hand with Team Engineering with getting the barn pieces done, all the utilities, grading and drainage around that, and how it integrated with our overall landscape plan.
We work with Team Engineering quite a bit. They are fantastic to work with. They are functional in that they are engineering focused, always trying to solve the problem the client has with the best solution possible, but they are not over-engineering things that are costing the client ridiculous amounts of money to build. They bring a very practical approach to every project.
As an allied professional, I have the utmost respect for John Turner (of Team Engineering) and his team, and everything that they do.
The home owner has a pretty sweet spot now. The back yard, landscaping, pool, and integration with the building for the basketball court is really something very special”.
Mike’s voice is full of excitement as he talks about the final result. He explains, “I put a rubber floor in the gym, something that wouldn’t track mud. Marnie designed a bathroom, and there will be a washer/dryer for pool use. And a local company put a 110” tv screen - actually four 55” monitors tied together with a quad processor – I’m out there watching NBA Finals while shooting hoops. We tell the kids, if you’re going to be watching tv, you’re going to be watching it IN the gym – not a lot of sitting around in our house. Keep the kids active and moving around. They use their hover-boards, rip sticks. I use it as a rebound wall, with a tennis ball. We will also use a lacrosse ball - all the windows have cages around them and are protected.
My kids play soccer, lacrosse, basketball and football. There’s lots of storage space for sports equipment gear in this building. During the long winter months, we need a place for them to go and be active and practice. The floor has radiant heating, it’s well insulated, well constructed. It keeps the environment perfect inside.
When the kids’ friends come over, their eyes light up. There are cameras installed for parental supervision, make sure everybody’s being nice to each other or if someone were to get hurt, rewind and watch it to see what’s happened”.
A vision has become a reality, for both parents.
Mike and Marnie on their own, at one point had come to the unhappy conclusion that they’d have to leave a home they loved in order to have this basketball court. Mike shares, “We actually spent time looking at other properties- we like our house but we wanted to do this so badly – that we looked for a couple of years and just never found the right thing, so, we built it. Now we have exactly what we were looking for.”
This satisfaction and expressed gratitude for Team Engineering making it possible for Mike's inside basketball court dream to develop into the sensational home court that the family is enjoying today, says it all.

From our client on this project, Brian Ki of Team Engineering:
"Bonnie is great to work with. We began with a conversation about photographing a client project where she offered suggestions on what marketing pieces might be needed for use of those photos. Then, she did all the organizing to bring this to a final product we can use as a complete Case Study or bits to pick from for shorter marketing pieces. She handled the phone calls and follow ups with everyone involved, including scheduling the photography with the home-owners and other professionals working on site, plus the Case Study interviews. We now have so many great photos and both client and industry partner testimonial quotes that we can use in many different ways. She answered the phone when we called, and everything went smoothly and easily, without our having to use lots of time that we don't have to get it done. Bonnie treated our clients with respect in all her contact with them, and we got the product we wanted."
